Development of Business Relations between Sakhalin and Japan

In order to develop business relations between Japan and Sakhalin, the Government of the region organized a meeting of business leaders from Japan with Sakhalin customs officials and representatives of the administration of Korsakov commercial sea port. The topic of the discussion was the procedure of food import from Japan to Sakhalin.

Nowadays, the Land of the Rising Sun is one of the leading countries in production of high-tech and quality products that can be distinguished for their reliability and utility. Despite the fact that the import of equipment and appliances to Sakhalin has already been well established, the importation of food is only breaking fresh ground.

The Japanese representatives were interested in the questions of unloading, time for customs clearance of perishable food products, as well as capabilities and capacities of temporary storage warehouses. In order to see everything with their own eyes, the representatives of Hokkaido Governor visited the customs office, temporary storage of goods, the Northern and Southern parts of Korsakov sea port.

Businessmen want to supply Sakhalin with various foods, including crop production. One of the main products which is planned to be imported is rice. It is in high demand in Japan due to its taste. Still, the process of customs clearance causes some concerns.

The Russian Customs officers recommended the Japanese businessmen to use the services of legal customs brokers who are licensed. They told about the list of goods which are banned for import to Russia and informed that it would be advisable to use the preliminary informing service for certain categories of goods in order to speed up the customs clearance. This technology ensures the submission of information on the goods in electronic form to the customs office prior to their arrival at the customs border.

The representative of Korsakov port informed the Japanese side about the capacity of the sea check point, ways of goods storage, their unloading and loading, and the ability of the port to work in winter.

The visit that was paid shows a growing interest on the part of Japanese business. Besides, it will further expand foreign economic relations between Japan and the Far East of Russia.
